This female Leucadendron xanthoconus bush growing in the Salmonsdam Nature Reserve has recently added new cones at the top among the dense stem-tip foliage of the last season.
It also holds many more cones from several earlier years lower down, where the leaves are fewer. These cones are increasingly dark and woody on the way down, showing age while retaining seeds. The oldest ones near the plant base still clutch seeds from flowering many years ago. Hardly any leaves are left this low on the stems, the cones fully exposed.
Reseeding after the next fire will most likely be a huge reproductive event for this plant, especially if good rains arrive at the right time (Marais, (Ed.), 2017; Manning, 2007; Bean and Johns, 2005; Mustart, et al, 1997; iNaturalist).
