The distribution area of Crassula expansa subsp. fragilis covers much of the eastern parts of South Africa and northwards to at least Tanzania and Madagascar. The habitat is rocky slopes and open grassland in summer rainfall areas, mainly away from winter cold.
As a garden plant it is slightly cold resistant and needs limited watering. It will grow in full sun, probably better in partial or dappled shade. It may be semi-deciduous, depending on the living conditions. A container may be a good idea, or a rockery corner from where it can’t spread more than is intended to, for it may be inclined to invade a bit in favourable conditions and bears watching (www.kumbulanursery.co.za; Germishuizen and Fabian, 1982).
