The scale-like, granular leaves of Phaenocoma prolifera are closely overlapping and pressed to short side-branches growing from the stiff, woody stems.
The stems are white and woolly, the erect plant reaching heights up to 60 cm.
The flowerheads grow at stem-tips (Bean and Johns, 2005).
