The African dog-rose, common name of Xylotheca kraussiana (SA Tree No. 493) grows naturally along the KZN coastal dunes, in dune forests and also in open woodland. It is often only a shrub, but sometimes becomes a tree, reaching 5 m in height. The scented white flowers are admired in spring. The fruit, a woody capsule, is longitudinally ridged and contains brown seeds with a bright red aril.
