The Kouga Valley is the eastern extreme of the distribution range of Hermannia odorata. Also the young leaves are folded, their beginnings thread-like.
Small, drooping, yellow flowers appear in spring among the velvety, folded leaves. In picture the flowering is about over, the withered calyx in picture pale brown, the protruding petals darker brown. Those not suffering from Covid may pick up a fragrance, or maybe when the flowers were young?
Only a short part of the upper stem is soft and creamy, soon turning red-brown and then grey, still velvety as it becomes woody (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist).
