Image information

Description

The succulent calyces of the Mesembryanthemum guerichianum flowers seen here are covered in large, globular bladder cells. The five pointed sepal tips may be reddish along their margins. An ample shock of white, hairy petals emerges from every newly opened flower.

Inside the ovary of each flower the seeds grow on the central column, distinguishing plants of the Mesembryanthemum genus from those similar Aizoaceae genera in which the seeds grow on the inner surfaces of the outer walls.

When water and soap are not readily available, rubbing the water rich leaves and sepals of this plant in the hands will serve as a wash. Don't destroy them unnecessarily (Smith, et al, 1998; Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2010; iSpot).
