Description

This good stand of Lobelia pinifolia in flower was seen on Hoy's Koppie in Hermanus in late September. The plant grows to heights ranging from 20 cm to 50 cm.

There are about 70 Lobelia species growing in most parts of South Africa; about half of them in fynbos. This forms but a small part of the widespread international presence of the genus, particularly in tropical regions.

Some sources place the genus of Lobelia in a family Lobeliaceae instead of Campanulaceae, although this seems to have fallen out of favour (Riley, 1963; www.plantzafrica.com).
