Description

Agapanthus africanus, previously A. minor and also A. umbellatus, is a rhizomatous, evergreen perennial reaching heights from 25 cm to 70 cm. The strap-shaped leaves are roundly keeled, about 35 cm long and 1,5 cm wide.

The funnel-shaped perianths are deep blue, mostly facing outwards in the compact umbel on short stalks. Each umbel is held high above the leaves by a sturdy, smooth scape.

Flowering happens from late spring to after mid-autumn. The photo was taken on Table Mountain in March, near the end of the hot, dry season (Manning, 2007; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
