Although Gasteria excelsa like sun, full sun sometimes damages the leaves, so they may look better when they receive reasonable water and only halfday sun or light filtered through some suitable shrub. The comparatively many-leaved rosette may or may not have white leaf spots.
These plants are found growing naturally in many of the drier areas of the Eastern Cape, also close to the coast. The species is not considered to be threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (http://redlist.sanbi.org).
