Description

The ploegtydblommetjie (little ploughing time flower), as Empodium plicatum is known locally, bears its flowers close to ground level. It has its ovary hidden below the flower tube among the leaf sheaths.

The generic name Empodium comes from the Greek em (within) and pod (foot), referring to the hidden ovary. This one was seen in the Elandsberg Private Nature Reserve at the end of May (Manning, 2009).
