Maytenus procumbens has no thorns (similar to trees of its genus), its leaves oblong to elliptical in shape. Leaves taper at both ends with a few spine-tipped teeth along the margins. Leaf colour is glossy to bluish green on the upper surface, paler to yellowish green below. The leaf texture is leathery.
The fruits are three-lobed spherical capsules, yellow to orange in colour with each seed attached to and enclosed by an orange aril (Coates Palgrave, 2002; JSTOR).
