The genus Lycium is widespread across several continents. In South Africa there are several species of these shrubs or trees, commonly known as kriedorings, especially in the Karoo.
This specimen was found near Bela-Bela in the Limpopo Province. A species that may be found growing in this area is Lycium bosciifolium, the Limpopo honey-thorn, (SA Tree List No. 669.6). According to Coates Palgrave (2002) that species has leaves with sharper tips than those in the photo.
The light blue or white trumpet flowers that cover Lycium bushes in season are attractive, but quite small.
