Ehretia rigida has rigid branches with characteristic mild curvature. This plant photographed in the Sabie region during July is believed to be E. rigida subsp. nervifolia, the only one of the three subspecies reported to grow in this area.
E. alba that only shows leaf midribs and no lateral veins as E. rigida sometimes does, grows towards the western parts of the country, Botswana and Namibia. E. rigida also resembles E. obtusifolia that has leaves without domatia and with petioles longer than 4 mm (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Van Wyk and Van Wyk, 1997).
