Bolusanthus speciosus (SA tree List No. 222) is here gradually losing its leaves in the Sabie area in July. Deciduous for a short period at springtime, winter leaves are still present, benefiting browser mammals of the woodlands in the north-eastern region of southern Africa. A time when many bushveld trees are already bare in the cold, lean season.
The erect growth habit of this tree is shown in the photo. Said to be producing one of the hardest of indigenous timbers, B. speciosus wood is sought after (Coates Palgrave, 2002).
