The bark on the young Anthocleista grandiflora stem seen here is neither brown nor grey, the colours normally expected. This one is still partly dull green, although scattered, darkening patches are appearing all over.
Apart from faint horizontal lines scattered along the stem, there is little evidence of the spots where dropped leaves or small branches from long ago had lost their positions. Some superficial vertical fissuring, whitish and squiggly, is noticeable all over the trunk surface.
Other than all that the stem appears smooth, as it is said to be (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Schmidt, et al, 2002).
