Daubenya zeyheri, commonly called the orange buttonhole flower, sometimes the limestone crownlily and in Afrikaans the bobbejaanhoek (baboon hook), is a bulbous plant of the Hyacinthaceae family.
The pretty red to orange flowers appear in winter. As the picture indicates it is flat on the ground between the prostrate, opposite leaves.
The species distribution is small in the far coastal west of the Western Cape from Paternoster to Langebaan. The photo was taken in the West Coast National Park.
The habitat is coastal scrub on granite, limestone and sandy flats in strandveld. The species is considered vulnerable in habitat early in the twenty first century due to coastal development, particularly limestone extraction but also livestock overgrazing.
These plants are not common outside their core habitat and not likely to be noticed unless stumbled upon in the flowering season (Manning and Goldblatt, 1996; iNaturalist; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
